Making a will allows you to make your personal wishes known and ensure that the people and causes you care about benefit from your estate. If you die without having made a will, it is possible that your entire estate could pass to the Crown. Even if you are married or have children, your family will not automatically receive your estate and could face hefty legal bills to secure their rights.
It is much easier to make a will than many people think and usually costs around £60 through a solicitor.
Remembering Happy Days in your will is an excellent way to ensure our work can continue. Charitable legacies are exempt from inheritance tax, so all of your gift will go to bringing some joy into a child's life.
There are a number of ways in which you can leave a legacy. The most common are:
Residuary legacy
This is the remainder of your estate after all other bequests and expenses have been deducted. A residuary legacy has the added benefit of keeping pace with inflation.
Pecuniary legacy
This is a gift of a specified amount of money. However, unlike a residuary bequest, inflation can reduce the value of a pecuniary gift.
Specific legacy
This is the gift of a specific item such as property, jewellery or other valuables.
